Fifteen is the gorilla minimum in both Uganda and Rwanda. Kibale chimpanzee tracking is currently twelve. Do not invent other ages. A sighting is never guaranteed on either product. Under-fifteens need a planned morning — lodge-based forest time, or golden monkeys where that product is currently offered — and a named adult who stays with them. The lodge still matches the permit sector of those who trek.

Fifteen, in both countries
The conservation rule is simple enough to hold in one sentence: a gorilla trek is for travellers who will be fifteen on the permit date. That applies in Bwindi, in Mgahinga, and in Volcanoes National Park. Sail reconfirms the live age rule at booking because park circulars can move, but we do not write a younger figure into a proposal to make a family itinerary tidier.
Do not buy a gorilla permit in case. Unpaid UWA holds are gone; a paid name that cannot walk is an authority product you may not recover. Journey deposits on the booking page are a different conversation from permit terms. Passport names and dates of birth should be stable before Sail pays the authority. A child who looks older is still a child on the document.

Kibale at twelve is not a workaround
Kibale Forest National Park is not next door to a Bwindi briefing. Chimpanzee tracking is its own chapter, with its own permit, and the current minimum age is twelve. Current chimpanzee tariffs sit on the chimpanzee permit journal and are confirmed at booking.
A chimpanzee morning can be a strong family chapter when the route already includes Kibale. It is not a same-day substitute for a gorilla briefing hours away, and it is not a guaranteed sighting.

Plan B for those who stay behind
The honest plan B is not a younger gorilla. It is a morning that belongs to the people who remain. Lodge-based forest time is the first instrument. Ask Sail what that lodge actually runs on a trek morning: birds, a guided walk the property staffs, a consented village or garden visit.
Golden monkey tracking is the second, where that product is currently offered — Volcanoes in Rwanda, Mgahinga in Uganda. Confirm the live product, the age rule and the briefing point at booking. Mgahinga is a separate park with a small daily gorilla allocation; a golden-monkey morning there is not overflow from a Bwindi sector. Do not promise a sighting. Community walks, where they are thoughtfully run, can also hold a stay-behind day. They are not a substitute permit.

Who stays with whom
Someone of age and authority stays with the under-fifteens. Write the name on the file. A private guide or lodge host can accompany a planned activity; they do not replace a parent or nominated adult unless that arrangement has been agreed in writing and the lodge accepts it.
If both adults intend to trek, the stay-behind plan has to be staffed and accepted before permits are paid.

How the lodge is chosen
The lodge remains locked to the permit sector of those who trek. Choose the property that can place trekkers at the correct briefing and still hold a decent morning for those who stay. Three nights helps.
Age eligibility is not the same as readiness for steep ground. The day itself is described on the gorilla-trekking fitness journal.

What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking?
Fifteen. Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rwanda Development Board both set the gorilla-trek minimum at 15. Do not plan around a younger exception.
Can a twelve-year-old trek chimpanzees instead?
Kibale chimpanzee tracking is currently 12 and over. That is a different permit in a different park, not a substitute gorilla morning, and a sighting is never guaranteed.
What do under-15s do on gorilla-trek morning?

Can we buy a gorilla permit in case the child is tall enough?
No. Age is the rule, not height or fitness. A paid permit for a traveller who cannot trek is not a plan B.
