The shape of the journey

Why this route works.

Unhurried, in clean two-night chapters with the Serengeti held longest

  1. Two nights in Tarangire and two at Ngorongoro protect the best morning and afternoon conditions in each without turning either into a transit.
  2. Three nights in the central Serengeti give the plains time to reveal resident cats and whatever the migration is doing that month.
  3. A bush flight back to Arusha closes the loop without retracing the circuit.

Signature Sail moments

  • Private airport welcome and a villa arrival
  • A dawn game drive through elephant country
  • A dawn crater descent
  • Full-day game drives shaped by current field intelligence

Arrive gently beneath Mount Meru

Arusha

Land at Kilimanjaro and settle into a quiet Arusha house among coffee and forest. We protect this first evening rather than placing an international arrival straight onto safari roads; the route is briefed over dinner.

Elephant country and baobab light

Tarangire

Begin with elephants, baobabs and a landscape that rewards patient driving. Dawn drives along the river, afternoons in the quieter reaches, and where the camp allows, a walk with an armed guide. The lodge position is chosen for the season and the preferred style of day.

The highlands and the crater floor

Ngorongoro

Enter the crater early, before the light flattens and the vehicles gather, then stay long enough to understand the highlands beyond the floor: Maasai country, forest edge and the wider conservation area. A private vehicle shapes the day around conditions rather than a standard circuit.

Central Serengeti

Three nights in the central Serengeti give the plains time to reveal resident cats, the Seronera river lines and whatever the migration is doing that month. Full-day drives follow field intelligence; nothing is promised about where the herds will be.

Day 9

Return with care

The journey closes with the Serengeti to Arusha flight and a private transfer to the international departure, timed with margin rather than haste.

Two expressions, one journey

The same route, in two registers of address.

The Most Exclusive Addresses and the Distinguished Camps and Lodges preserve the same route, purpose and Sail operating standard. The expression changes the addresses, never the soul of the journey. Every property is a current decision set, not guaranteed inventory; availability, opening and access are confirmed live.

From price, 2027 season

From US$8,585 per person in the low season, 15 March to 31 May and 1 November to 15 December

Distinguished Camps and Lodges, two adults, per person sharing, confirmed at quotation.

Prices are per person for two adults sharing; a party of four or six changes the vehicle and guide cost per person, and Sail prices that at quotation.

Recommended months: June to October and December to March, with the Serengeti sector chosen by month. Where these fall in the high season, 1 June to 31 October and 16 December to 14 March, the Distinguished expression starts from US$10,345 per person on the same basis; where they fall in the low season the figure above applies. Individual properties may price festive and peak weeks above the high-season rate.

Includes the scheduled flight sector at US$310 per person on 2027 fares, carried at cost.

The Most Exclusive Addresses expression, single travellers, families and dates that straddle the two seasons are priced on request. Published from prices are public rates; travel advisors receive nett rates at quotation.

Every figure is confirmed once permits, air sectors and lodge availability are held for your dates. Park, conservancy and permit fees are charged at the rates published by the authorities that set them, confirmed at booking.

The Sail standard

Held to, and left out.

What Sail holds to on this journey

  • Every transfer, permit, activity and contingency has a named operator.
  • Major wilderness chapters normally receive three nights or more.
  • At least one unbooked half-day appears in the design.
  • Private vehicle and Sail guide on the road chapters; air sectors only where the route calls for them.
  • Permits, sectors and lodge availability are confirmed live before anything is written as final.

What Sail does not do

  • No figure is written as final before every air sector and supplier rate has been verified for your dates; published from prices are public starting points on the Distinguished expression.
  • No sighting, crossing or encounter is promised; likelihood is discussed openly.
  • No fixed departure or set package is implied by this journey.
  • No single safari night without a deliberate transit job.

Plan with a clearer frame

Season, party size and the shape of the investment.

Best fit. First-time safari travellers and private groups who want the classic northern circuit in nine days without compromise.

Choose another route when. Choose The Classic, Unhurried for two Serengeti regions and a longer stay, or Elephant Kingdoms for a gentler family circuit without the Serengeti.

A Sail planning perspective

A starting point, never a fixed package.

Sail chooses the Serengeti sector by month rather than by camp name and never promises a crossing. Crater access is time-limited, so the descent is planned early and the private vehicle shapes the day.

Every final journey is built around confirmed availability, the current season, your preferred pace and the character of places you want to stay. No fixed departure is implied by this journey; the from price is a starting point for the Distinguished expression, not a package.
