The Classic, Unhurried: an 11-day northern Tanzania safari

The northern circuit slowed down and split by ecological purpose rather than fame: Tarangire, the crater and five Serengeti nights across two regions, with the last placement following the season.

Plan with a clearer frame

Season, party size and the shape of the investment.

Best fit. First safaris and honeymoons that should feel definitive rather than compressed, with time to read the plains.

Choose another route when. Choose Northern Icons if eight nights is the limit, or The Calving if February and the short-grass plains are the point.

Green seasonSelected March to May and November dates

Lush landscapes, dramatic skies and greater flexibility, with rain and track conditions designed into the day.

The private vehicle, guide and fixed route costs are shared by two, so the per-person investment is usually highest.Four travellers usually create the clearest private-journey efficiency while preserving one vehicle and a close group dynamic.Six travellers can share more fixed costs, subject to luggage, room mix and whether one or two vehicles best protect comfort.
Shoulder seasonJanuary to February and selected June dates

Wildlife depth and camp choice outside the principal crossing months, with calving on the southern plains.

Peak seasonJuly to October and festive dates

Highest camp and flight demand; the Serengeti sector is chosen by month, without promising a crossing.

The shape of the journey

Why this route works.

Unhurried, with the Serengeti given the longest stay

  1. The route builds from quieter elephant country to the concentrated wildlife of the crater, then gives the Serengeti five nights across two regions.
  2. The final Serengeti placement follows the season, north in crossing months or south to Ndutu for calving, never the brochure.
  3. A private vehicle through Tarangire and Ngorongoro protects flexibility; a bush flight at the end preserves time.

Signature Sail moments

  • Private airport welcome and a villa arrival
  • A dawn game drive through elephant country
  • A dawn crater descent
  • Full-day game drives shaped by current field intelligence

  1. Arusha, one night: arrival beneath Mount Meru.
  2. Tarangire, two nights: elephant country, by private road.
  3. Ngorongoro, two nights: the crater at first light, by private road.
  4. Central Serengeti, three nights: the plains and river lines, by private road.
  5. Northern Serengeti or Ndutu, two nights, placed by the month.
  6. Serengeti to Arusha by scheduled flight for the international departure.

Day by day

The considered route.

01

Day 1 · Arusha

Arrive gently beneath Mount Meru

Land at Kilimanjaro and settle into a quiet Arusha house among coffee and forest. We protect this first evening rather than placing an international arrival straight onto safari roads; the route is briefed over dinner.

02

Days 2 to 3 · Tarangire

Elephant country and baobab light

Begin with elephants, baobabs and a landscape that rewards patient driving. Dawn drives along the river, afternoons in the quieter reaches, and where the camp allows, a walk with an armed guide. The lodge position is chosen for the season and the preferred style of day.

03

Days 4 to 5 · Ngorongoro

The highlands and the crater floor

Enter the crater early, before the light flattens and the vehicles gather, then stay long enough to understand the highlands beyond the floor: Maasai country, forest edge and the wider conservation area. A private vehicle shapes the day around conditions rather than a standard circuit.

04

Days 6 to 8 · Serengeti

Read the moving ecosystem

Three nights in the central Serengeti give the plains time to reveal resident cats, the Seronera river lines and whatever the migration is doing that month. Full-day drives follow field intelligence; nothing is promised about where the herds will be.

05

Days 9 to 10 · Serengeti

The north, read properly

Move to the northern Serengeti for the Mara River country. In crossing season the days are planned around possibility rather than certainty; outside it the north is quiet, open and rich in resident game. A crossing is never promised.

06

Day 11 · Departure

Return with care

The journey closes with the Serengeti to Arusha flight and a private transfer to the international departure, timed with margin rather than haste.

Two expressions, one journey

The Most Exclusive Addresses and the Distinguished Camps and Lodges preserve the same route, purpose and Sail operating standard. The expression changes the addresses, never the soul of the journey. A Sail planning perspective

A starting point, never a fixed package.

Migration timing is natural and cannot be promised. Sail confirms current camp positions, air schedules and crater access rules before proposing the final version of this route.

Every final journey is built around confirmed availability, the current season, your preferred pace and the character of places you want to stay. No fixed departure or price is implied by this sample.
