What the crater morning actually requires
The crater is a single-descent event under current NCAA rules, with time on the floor managed and the service fee, 295 US dollars per vehicle, charged per descent. That structure rewards doing it once, properly: down as early as your start allows, the full morning on the floor while the light is low and the vehicle count is thin, up when the day flattens.
Work backwards from that morning and the bed chooses itself. The descent road's gate opens early; a rim lodge puts you at it in minutes, while Karatu adds the climb to the gate before the day begins. Neither is wrong. What is wrong is booking the bed first, from a photograph, and discovering the morning it was supposed to serve was never designed.

The rim, honestly
The rim's argument is proximity and address. Waking above the caldera, watching the light come up across the floor you are about to descend to, is one of the circuit's genuine theatrical moments, and the operational gain is real: first vehicles at the gate usually slept on the rim.
The costs are equally real. Nights near 2,300 metres are cold enough for hot-water bottles and log fires; some travellers at altitude sleep poorly. Rim properties price the address firmly, and because the rim is a ridge rather than a resort area, afternoons there offer views and rest rather than activities. The rim is a magnificent one-night instrument; it is rarely the right base for three.
One more honesty the photographs omit: the rim makes its own weather. Cloud and mist can sit on the caldera's lip through the early hours, swallowing the famous view exactly when you were promised it, and burning off as you descend into a sunlit floor. Guests briefed on this find it atmospheric; guests sold a permanent postcard feel cheated. The view is a strong probability with theatrical exceptions, which is, fittingly, the crater's own weather system in miniature.

Karatu, honestly
Karatu is the highlands' market town, and the lodges among its coffee farms are some of the Northern Circuit's most comfortable and best-valued beds: gardens, pools, fireplaces, genuinely good kitchens and warm nights at a kinder altitude. Farm and village walks, coffee tours and cycling give afternoons real content, which matters on longer circuits where every day cannot be a park day.
The cost is the morning: the drive up to the gate means an earlier start for the same descent time, and in the long rains the gate road asks more of the schedule. For files pairing the crater with Tarangire, Manyara or a Serengeti drive-in, Karatu's position is close to inevitable anyway, which is why the value it offers is not a compromise but a design choice.
Choose the rim when

How early should the descent start?
As early as your bed allows: the floor's best hours are the first ones. Rim sleepers reach the gate in minutes; Karatu files simply set the alarm earlier for the same result.
Can you do two crater days?
You can, but each descent carries the per-vehicle service fee and the floor's magic does not double. Charlie's advice on most files: one early, unhurried descent, then spend the second day elsewhere in the highlands.
Do the crater fees depend on where I sleep?
No: the conservation-area daily fee and the per-descent vehicle fee are the NCAA's published figures from either bed. Stays inside the conservation area, including the rim, carry the daily fee for each day you are within it, restated exactly on your quote.
