The honest flying day
From Bwindi or Volcanoes the route first returns to a capital, Entebbe or Kigali, by road or light aircraft, then flies on to Zanzibar. Stack the segments honestly and it is a full travel day, door to door, arriving with the light going or gone. The version that ignores it, promising a beach afternoon on arrival day, spends the journey's final energy on an airport race. Nobody remembers that afternoon fondly, because it never really happens.

The visa fact that catches routes out
The East African Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda only. Zanzibar is Tanzania, so the coast chapter needs its own entry arrangements, settled per passport before travel rather than discovered at a check-in desk. This is the single most common paperwork surprise on gorilla-and-beach routes.

How many nights make the coast worth it
Three nights is the working minimum after a safari: the arrival evening, two full days of sea and slowness, and a departure that does not undo the rest. Four or five nights lets the chapter breathe, and suits honeymoons and families for whom the coast is a destination rather than a decompression.
Fewer than three and the arithmetic turns against the traveller: two flying days bracketing a single full day is a transfer with a sea view. Where the route cannot afford three coastal nights, the braver design is to spend them in the forest or on the savannah instead and end there well.
