The short answer
What to know first.
The combination works, and it is one of the most rewarding primate journeys East Africa offers: mountain gorillas in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, chimpanzees in Uganda's Kibale Forest, joined by a road crossing at Cyanika or Katuna. It needs two permits from two authorities, RDB for the gorillas and UWA for the chimpanzees, both date-locked, and an honest border day planned as its own chapter rather than squeezed between two treks. Minimum ages differ: 15 for the gorillas, 12 for Kibale's chimpanzees. Sail holds both permits, the visa instrument and the crossing on one desk so the two halves behave as one journey.
At a glance
The planning brief.
The combination
Volcanoes gorillas and Kibale chimpanzees join across the Cyanika or Katuna border in one journey.
Two authorities
RDB issues the gorilla permit, UWA the chimpanzee permit. Two payments, two receipts, one file.
The border day
Plan the crossing as a chapter with honest hours, not as a line between two mornings.
Sail verifies
Both permits, the visa instrument for the crossing, and recovery time between the two treks.
01
Why this pairing earns its logistics
Volcanoes National Park sits a short drive from Kigali, which makes Rwanda the easiest gorilla approach in East Africa, and Kibale is the region's flagship chimpanzee forest, with tracking that feels entirely different from a gorilla morning: faster, louder and lower to the ground. The two experiences are complements rather than substitutes, which is exactly why the pairing is worth a border.
The ages matter at design time: gorilla trekking is 15 and over, Kibale chimpanzee tracking is 12 and over. A family with a 13-year-old can build the chimpanzee morning around everyone and the gorilla morning around the eligible, which is a different journey from one where both treks include the whole party.
02
Two authorities, one file
The Rwanda Development Board issues the gorilla permit; the Uganda Wildlife Authority issues the chimpanzee permit. Two payments, two receipts, two sets of conditions, and both permits locked to specific dates. Neither authority knows or cares about the other's calendar, so the sequencing discipline lives entirely with whoever holds the file.
Current tariffs and conditions for both permits are confirmed at booking. What the design protects throughout is the pair of fixed mornings: everything else on the route flexes around those two dates, never the reverse.

03
The border day, planned as a chapter
The crossing at Cyanika, near Kisoro, or Katuna serves this route, and it deserves honest hours: formalities on both sides, a change of driving side, and real road time on either flank. From Volcanoes the road runs north into southwestern Uganda; Kibale then sits a further, genuine drive beyond, which is why the route usually rests a night between the border and the chimpanzees.
The visa instrument is settled before travel. The East African Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda, which suits this combination well; what it never covers is Tanzania, a fact that matters the moment a Serengeti or Zanzibar chapter joins the map.
04
Sequencing and recovery
Either direction works, and the chooser is usually the international flights: land where the route starts cleanly and leave from the other capital rather than doubling back. What the sequence must protect is recovery, a settled night before each trek and an unhurried day after the gorillas, whose walk can be long.
The tempting mistake is treating the two treks as adjacent mornings with a border in between. The design that travels well gives the crossing its own day and lets each forest keep its own rhythm.
Questions travellers ask
Useful answers, before you decide.
Can one visa cover this journey?
The East African Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda, so it suits the Rwanda and Uganda combination. Entry requirements are confirmed per passport before travel.
Which trek should come first?
Either works. International flight schedules usually decide, and the design then protects a settled night before each trek and honest recovery after the gorilla morning.
Are the two permits bookable together?
They are booked in one instruction but issued by two authorities, RDB and UWA, each with its own payment, receipt and conditions. Sail holds both on one file with the border day between them.
