The shape of the journey

Why this route works.

Three distinct regions with private road or flight options

  1. The route shows Rwanda's ecological range rather than reducing the country to one primate encounter.
  2. Kigali is treated as meaningful context and a logistics hinge, not simply an airport transfer.
  3. Road and helicopter options can be calibrated to time, comfort and the experience desired between regions.

Day by day

The considered route.

01

Day 1 · Kigali

Arrive with context

Meet your Sail host and settle in. If timing allows, a private programme introduces the city's history, design and contemporary energy with appropriate care.

02

Days 2–3 · Akagera

Savannah restored

Travel east for game drives and a boat journey within Akagera's lakes-and-plains landscape. Two nights create a distinct wildlife chapter and reveal one of East Africa's notable conservation stories.

03

Days 4–5 · Nyungwe

Across the hills to ancient forest

Return through Kigali and continue west by private road or arranged air connection. Forest activities are selected around interests, age and current permit availability.

04

Days 6–8 · Volcanoes

The Virunga highlands

Move north for three nights in the volcanic landscape. One morning is centred on a confirmed gorilla permit; golden monkeys, local culture or a slower lodge day can shape the remaining time.

05

Day 9 · Kigali

A measured return

Return privately to Kigali for the onward flight, with timing built around traffic, check-in and any final city stop.

A Sail planning perspective

A starting point, never a fixed package.

Gorilla permits are limited and subject to availability. Trek requirements, forest activities and current transfer options are checked before confirming the final itinerary.

Every final journey is built around confirmed availability, the current season, your preferred pace and the character of places you want to stay. No fixed departure or price is implied by this sample.
