What to know first.
A second Kigali night earns its place in three honest cases: when a long-haul arrival lands late or tired and the party needs a real night before moving; when the Volcanoes briefing is early enough that arriving guests would otherwise be building a trek morning on an overnight flight; and when the journey's design genuinely wants a calm city chapter, a museum morning or a considered start. It fails the test when it exists out of habit on a short file, because on five or six nights the currency it spends is a forest night, and the forest night is usually worth more. The decision is arithmetic plus honesty: flight timings against the briefing hour, the party's condition, and what the journey is actually for, settled at design rather than defaulted.

What the first Kigali night does
Almost every Rwanda file keeps one Kigali night on arrival, and it works hard: it absorbs flight delay, restores the party after long-haul travel, and puts the genocide memorial within reach for guests who want their journey to hold that history with respect.
The question is only ever about the second night. It doubles the calm, and it also doubles the cost in time, on files where time is the scarcest asset after the permits themselves.

When the second night protects
Late-evening long-haul arrivals argue for it: a party landing near midnight should not meet a volcano at dawn two days later with only one recovery night between. Families with young travellers, guests managing health conditions and honeymooners who want the start gentle all cash this night in well.
It also serves when the briefing maths is tight. Volcanoes trekkers report early, and the drive from Kigali is comfortably done the afternoon before; a second city night can be the difference between arriving at the mountain rested and arriving rushed.

When it steals
On a short file the second city night is usually the forest's night in disguise. Three nights at the volcanoes rather than two changes what the journey feels like: an unhurried trek morning, a golden-monkey or community day, and an evening that does not begin with packing.
The city cannot give that back. When a file arrives with two Kigali nights written in by template, Sail's first design question is which of them is doing real work, and the answer decides itself once the flights are laid against the briefing hour.

How Sail decides it
The test is written in one line on the design sheet: what does this night protect? Protection of the briefing, the party's condition or a purpose the client actually named keeps the night; protection of nothing sends it to the forest, or occasionally to the far side of the journey as a final-night buffer before the flight home.
Either answer is then built properly: the kept night gets a hotel chosen for rest rather than address, and the moved night gets the earlier start it demands, with the drive timed for the season and the briefing hour confirmed.

Is one Kigali night ever too few?
After a very late long-haul arrival, yes: one night can leave the party meeting the mountain tired. That is the classic case where the second night earns its keep, and Sail will say so plainly.
Does the second night suit the end of the journey instead?
Sometimes. A final Kigali night before a morning long-haul departure can protect the whole file's last day, and it often costs less in journey value than a second night at the start.
What is worth doing in Kigali beyond resting?
The genocide memorial, respectfully planned, is the most important visit. Beyond it, the city offers coffee, galleries and an easy pace; Sail arranges what fits the party rather than a checklist.
