Ol Pejeta Conservancy combines strong big-game viewing with one of East Africa’s most important rhino conservation stories. Rhino encounters and private guiding

Black and white rhino are central, alongside lion, elephant, buffalo, plains game and, with luck, wild dog. The northern white rhino programme and selected conservation visits add depth when booked appropriately. Sail sets expectations carefully and avoids turning sensitive work into spectacle.

Day and night drives, hides, walking and lion-tracking activities may be available depending on the conservancy programme and age restrictions. A private vehicle helps balance structured visits with unhurried wildlife time.

How Ol Pejeta fits the route

Ol Pejeta is accessible by road from Nairobi and through nearby airstrips, with easy links to Laikipia, Samburu and the Mara. Two nights can introduce the conservancy; three allows a better balance of wildlife and conservation experiences.

East, west and the wider Mount Kenya region

Camp position affects access to activity meeting points and quieter game areas. Sail checks the daily programme, transfer time and onward route before choosing the base, especially when pairing Ol Pejeta with another Laikipia conservancy.

Where to stay

Kicheche Laikipia offers an intimate tented experience within the conservancy. Porini Rhino Camp emphasises a small-camp, conservation-led approach, while Sweetwaters Serena provides broader facilities and family convenience. Selected private houses can suit multigenerational groups when privacy is the priority.

When to travel

Ol Pejeta works throughout the year. Drier conditions tend to concentrate wildlife and simplify drives; green months bring richer colour, birding and a quieter atmosphere. Conservation activities operate on specific schedules, so availability matters as much as season.
