Choose a conservancy, not simply a lodge

Safari beyond the vehicle

Day and night drives can reveal elephant, lion, leopard, wild dog and, in selected areas, important rhino populations. Guided walks, camel-supported outings, horseback safaris and photographic hides make Laikipia particularly strong for travellers who want participation as well as observation.

How Laikipia fits the journey

Scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson and the Mara make Laikipia a natural northern chapter. Three nights is a minimum; four or five suits multi-activity stays. Road access can work from Nairobi or the Mount Kenya region when the route is designed around the plateau.

Lewa, Loisaba, Borana, Segera and the wider plateau

Each conservancy has its own terrain, wildlife emphasis and activity rules. Lewa is renowned for rhino conservation; Loisaba combines dramatic escarpment with wide-ranging activities; Borana offers private wilderness; Segera brings art and design. Geography should lead the choice.

Where to stay

Sirikoi, Segera Retreat, Ol Jogi and Arijiju sit at the highest end of privacy and design. Lewa Safari Camp, Lewa Wilderness, Loisaba Tented Camp, Borana Lodge, Solio Lodge and Kicheche Laikipia each bring a distinct conservation setting. Sail recommends by conservancy fit, not prestige alone.

When to travel

Laikipia works year-round. Clearer, drier periods favour classic game viewing and outdoor dining; greener months bring dramatic landscapes, strong birding and fewer guests. Conditions vary across the plateau, so Sail checks the specific conservancy rather than applying one regional rule.
