What to know first.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are both UWA-issued gorilla products, and they are not interchangeable. Bwindi holds most of Uganda's permits across four sectors, each with its own trailhead and lodges; Mgahinga is a distinct Virunga park above Kisoro with a small daily allocation, its own briefing and a different mountain character. A Mgahinga permit does not unlock Bwindi, and a Bwindi permit does not unlock Mgahinga. Availability and conditions are confirmed at booking.

Two parks, two characters
Bwindi is ancient rainforest: dense, steep, misty, with four trekking sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo — that do not share a trailhead. Mgahinga is Uganda's corner of the Virunga volcanoes: open bamboo and afro-alpine slopes beneath Muhavura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo, walked from the Ntebeko side above Kisoro.
The trekking feel differs. Bwindi is close forest where the canopy shapes the morning; Mgahinga offers longer sight lines and volcano scenery, with the same regulated hour once a family is reached. Neither park ranks its families, and no sighting is guaranteed in either.

Permits and allocation
Both parks are booked through UWA by a licensed operator, paid in full at confirmation under the same no-unpaid-hold rule that governs every Uganda gorilla file. Bwindi carries the bulk of national inventory across its sectors; Mgahinga's daily allocation is small, which cuts both ways — scarcer on peak dates, and occasionally the calm answer when Bwindi's preferred sectors are gone.
Treat Mgahinga as its own permit with its own briefing, not as a fifth Bwindi gate. The lodge must serve the park actually booked: a Mgahinga morning needs a Kisoro-facing stay, and no Bwindi lodge covers it.

Access and routing
Mgahinga sits naturally on a Kisoro axis, which also serves Bwindi's southern sectors and the Cyanika border with Rwanda — a Kigali arrival can reach it elegantly. Buhoma and Ruhija belong to different roads entirely, connecting north toward Queen Elizabeth or east toward Lake Bunyonyi.
This is why the park decision is a routing decision. A journey already shaped around Kigali or Kisoro weighs Mgahinga and southern Bwindi; a Uganda-shaped circuit through Queen Elizabeth leans north. The permit follows the route that exists, not the brochure.

Golden monkeys, and who else the park serves
Mgahinga adds something Bwindi does not: golden monkey tracking on the same slopes, which matters for mixed parties where some travellers hold gorilla permits and others — including under-15s — need a genuine morning of their own. Batwa cultural experiences also run in this landscape, with named community partners rather than generic village stops.
For a family or a party of mixed ages and energies, that combination can decide the park before scenery does.

Is Mgahinga easier than Bwindi?
No. Terrain in both parks follows where the family has moved that morning. Mgahinga's slopes are volcanic and can be long; Bwindi's contours are serious in every sector. Choose on routing and character, not on a promised grade of walk.
Can I swap a Mgahinga permit for a Bwindi sector later?
Not as a casual amendment. Each park's permit is its own date-locked product with the authority, so a change is a new availability question, confirmed with UWA at the time.
Which lodges serve Mgahinga?
