Permit order
The scarcer or least flexible line is confirmed first, then the border and lodging follow.

Uganda and Rwanda gorillas
Use two countries only when the second permit and border add a genuinely different journey chapter.
Test a two-country gorilla routeThe useful answer first
Uganda and Rwanda can belong in one gorilla journey, but two permits do not automatically make it better. The route must respect UWA and RDB as separate systems, protect the border day, match each lodge to its trailhead and leave recovery time between demanding mornings. Six to nine nights is a more credible working shape than a hurried double trek.
Decision framework
The second country should add contrast, not simply another permit receipt.
| Route or choice | Works best when | Watch carefully |
|---|---|---|
| One trek in each country | Comparison, photography or repeat interest justifies two forest mornings | Back-to-back strenuous days and a border placed before briefing |
| Uganda gorillas plus Rwanda route | Bwindi's sector choice and Kigali or Akagera both matter | A long road sequence without recovery |
| One gorilla country only | Time, budget or wider safari priorities are stronger elsewhere | Treating fewer countries as a lesser journey |
What changes the answer
These are the details Sail checks before a route, room or permit line is treated as settled.
The scarcer or least flexible line is confirmed first, then the border and lodging follow.
Cyanika, Katuna and other crossings serve different sectors and route shapes. Hours and formalities are checked for the date.
Fitness, knees, weather and desired pace determine whether two treks should sit close together.
Named route examples
A geographically clean pairing when the Uganda permit sits in Rushaga or Nkuringo and the border is checked.
An open-jaw Uganda route using Rwanda for access, without requiring a second gorilla permit.
A longer two-country route when forest contrast and Rwanda's savannah both earn their nights.
Sail's considered positionTwo authorities, two permits and one border require one working file. If the second trek does not add enough value to justify its cost and recovery time, we remove it.
Evidence behind the recommendation
These Journal answers show the reasoning behind the route, season and trade-offs. Rules, rates, schedules and natural events can change, so date-sensitive facts are reconfirmed before booking.
