For peak dates, small high-demand camps, gorilla permits, family units or exclusive-use houses, begin roughly nine to eighteen months ahead when possible. Excellent shorter-lead journeys remain possible, but the route should be built around real availability rather than a fixed wish list.

Find the fixed points
Every complex itinerary has one or two scarce components. It might be a primate permit, migration-positioned camp, private villa or family room. Check those first and hold the surrounding route lightly until they are viable.
Booking flights and a celebrated lodge before checking those scarce components can force awkward geography.

Peak and festive dates
School holidays, festive periods and popular dry-season windows pressure small camps and internal flights. Minimum stays or stricter payment conditions may apply.
If dates are fixed, lead time matters more. If dates can move, a skilled designer can protect the experience by shifting sequence or choosing a less obvious area.

Last-minute does not mean impossible
Cancellations occur and good camps exist beyond the most publicised names. A short-lead safari can be excellent when the traveller is flexible about properties, sequence and sometimes country.
It should not rely on unconfirmed permits or improbable flight connections. Present what is genuinely bookable.

Holds, deposits and confirmation
An option or courtesy hold is not a confirmation. Hold periods vary, and some services require immediate payment. Permit and airline terms can differ from lodge terms.
Read the proposal, payment schedule, cancellation conditions and insurance expectations before authorising deposits.

Continue checking after booking
Entry requirements, flight schedules, park fees and operational details can change. A DMC's work continues through reconfirmation, final documents and in-destination support.

Can I book two years ahead?
Sometimes, although all supplier rates or flight schedules may not yet be released. Sail can advise what can be secured and what remains provisional.
Should I book international flights first?
Check the safari framework and critical availability first, then coordinate international flights with confirmed arrival and departure logic.
Can you plan a safari in three months?
Often yes, with flexibility. Permit-led or festive travel may be much more constrained.
