The short answer
What to know first.
An in-country DMC designs and operates inside the destination, holds supplier contracts, books UWA and RDB permits as a licensed operator and stays reachable when a flight moves. A source-market operator packages East Africa from another time zone and typically sub-contracts the ground; lodge-direct leaves permits, borders and transfers with you. The useful test is the work, the licence and the operating map, not a directory badge.
At a glance
The planning brief.
In-country DMC
One East African team for design, permits, vehicles, guides, lodges and 24-hour operations across four countries.
Source-market operator
Ask who legally books the parks, who holds the receipts, and who answers after dark in Kampala or Kigali.
Lodge-direct
Correct for a single stay. Incomplete for a gorilla morning plus savannah plus a border.
Advisor protection
White-label language, NETT commercial files, and guides who never introduce Sail as a competing brand.
01
What an in-country DMC is for
A private safari is a chain of suppliers who do not share a diary. The guest should not coordinate that chain, and neither should you from another continent after dark. The DMC's job is to turn your brief into an operated route: current road and airstrip reality, permit sector, lodge that matches that sector, names as they will appear on documents, and one accountable hand when something moves.
Local knowledge is knowing what to remove, where to place margin, and which supplier fits the traveller. Sail operates Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania as one region, with one team watching how a late flight into Kigali affects a Volcanoes morning, or how a Bwindi sector choice affects the road toward Queen Elizabeth.
02
Source-market operator versus DMC
If you work with a home-market safari house that then uses a ground handler, the questions are specific. If the house cannot answer them without delay, you have a brochure with a sub-contractor behind it. A DMC does not automatically make the trip less expensive; the value is fit, coordination, contracted services and someone accountable on the ground.
The licence
Who is the licensed operator on the UWA or RDB permit, and in whose name is the park receipt issued.
The receipt
Who can produce that receipt the same day you ask for it.
The authority
When a connection fails, who can move the vehicle, the lodge night and the permit conversation.
The meeting
Whether the guest is met by someone who reports to you, or by a third brand with its own selling script.

03
Lodge-direct, and why it breaks on gorilla mornings
Booking a favoured lodge yourself is rational when the journey is one property. It becomes fragile the moment you add a date-specific gorilla permit, a second country, or a vehicle that must be in the correct Bwindi sector the night before briefing.
Lodges do not control UWA or RDB inventory. Unpaid park holds are no longer the working method in Uganda; a date is secured by full payment through a licensed operator. If a property says the permit is included, ask who pays the authority, on which tariff, for which names, and who keeps the receipt. Lodge-direct also leaves you matching sector to stay on your own, and Buhoma is not Rushaga.
04
White-label, NETT, and who the guest meets
Partner proposals can be written in your name. NETT files separate park-authority charges, lodge costs and ground operation so you can place your own fee where your client expects it. Gorilla permits do not follow the lodge clock, because the park requires full payment to lock the date.
White-label is a conduct rule. Guides and hosts do not sell Sail to the guest; they deliver the day and keep you informed, with 24-hour in-destination care part of the same promise.
05
People, not a slogan
Sail is one locally based team of journey designers, country specialists, operations coordinators and private guides. Nulu Kamuntu, who leads the safari desk, previously worked as a Safari Curator with Abercrombie & Kent. The useful test is whether the person who learns your client remains close to the route, and whether the operating team will still answer when the road has changed.
We do not list invented awards and we do not claim Fora or Virtuoso membership. Ask for legal identity, physical presence, written terms, an emergency pathway, and the names of the people who will run the days you have sold.
Questions travellers ask
Useful answers, before you decide.
Are you a Fora or Virtuoso preferred partner?
We work with advisors on those desks, among others. Membership is not claimed on our live trade page, so it is not claimed here. Credentials should be the work, the licence and the operating map.
Will my client know Sail's name?
Only as you have agreed. White-label operation is available, and guest-facing language is settled before confirmation.
Who do I call during the safari?
You have a dedicated Sail contact throughout. The guest has the local operating number on their final documents.
Can you work on NETT?
Yes. Partner files can be structured NETT, with inclusions, exclusions and payment terms in writing. Park-authority lines stay visible as park-authority lines.
